The ongoing education of engineering practitioners: how do they perceive the usefulness of academic research?

This study explores the usefulness of academic research to engineering practitioners. Issues such as knowledge transfer, the research-practice gap and the changing social/political environment are discussed. An empirical survey of practitioners is analysed to better understand the engineering professions use of academic material, such as research journals, with the medical profession acting as the benchmark. The study also examines the future role for academia from the perspective of practitioners, with areas such as engagement, relevance, dissemination and education highlighted. While the study found there was a reasonable level of utilisation of academic material, there are still some significant gaps. The study brings to the fore the issue of relevance in applied research fields and highlights the need to evaluate the usefulness of our research to practitioners and the betterment of society.  相似文献

湘中紫色土丘岗区农业生态工程优化模式的效益分析--以衡南县谭子山镇工联村为例

湘中衡阳盆地紫色土丘陵岗地分布广泛，这里普遍植被稀疏，水土流失严重，部分地区甚至基岩裸露，土地荒芜，呈现红色荒漠化现象。本文以衡南县工联村为例，针对湘中紫色土丘岗区综合开发项目示范区的农业生态工程优化模式，采用层次分析法和对比分析法，分别从生态效益、经济效益、社会效益和综合效益等方面进行1990年与2001年的对比分析。结果显示，工联村农业生态经济系统的生态效益、经济效益和社会效益指数均有显著提高，并已由非生态农业阶段发展进入到良性生态农业阶段，为湘中紫色土丘陵综合治理、农业生态工程建设和农业结构调整提供了一个良好的示范。  相似文献   

An evaluation of the impact of a Year in industry scheme

This paper reports a survey of the progress of participants in a year in industry scheme for A’ level graduates in the UK typically aged 18/19. The scheme involves spending a supervised year in industry prior to a degree programme in engineering. The evidence shows that the year in industry: has a beneficial effect on the degree classification of the academically weaker participants, but little effect on the stronger; encourages all participants to take up further study; provides participants with a more positive picture of industry and engineering; but does not provide greater motivation to enter industry; provides greater financial remuneration in the world of work than would otherwise be the case. These results can be interpreted in terms of the way young people weigh the benefits of different career paths. Our hypothesis is that this involves moving to situations where they are more likely to be treated as adults.  相似文献
